Things To Do Plumstead

The Family Friendly Suburb

One of the most welcoming suburb of Cape Town. Plumstead has a rich history with homes that built in the 40s and 50s. This suburb is very quiet and safe most suited to families. There are amazing walking and jogging trails in this area which are the best in the area.

Plumstead: An English Village Name on an Old VOC Camp

Plumstead was developed on the site of an old VOC military camp and was already a growing village by 1823. Its name was brought to the Cape by Henry Batt, who emigrated from Plumstead, England, in 1807. Author Olive Schreiner, one of South Africa’s best-known writers, spent her final years in a house here and died in Plumstead in 1920. Much of the suburb today is filled with homes built in the 1940s and 1950s, giving it a distinctly time-worn, English-village character.

Outdoor Adventures

Plumstead has a good spread of small local parks, Lympleigh Road, Waterford, Burnham Road and Churchill Road among them, along with easy access to Constantia’s wine route and Table Mountain trails nearby.

Food and Dining

Plumstead has a handful of genuinely well-loved, unpretentious local restaurants, with Diep River and Wynberg close by for more variety.

Family Friendly Activities

Plumstead’s mix of pensioners and younger buyers renovating older homes gives it a settled, low-key family character, with the railway station right in the heart of the suburb making commuting easy.

Nightlife and Culture

Plumstead is quiet after dark, in keeping with its village character. Wynberg and Claremont are the nearest options for something livelier.
