The Wine Suburb
Constantia: South Africa’s Oldest Wine Valley
Constantia takes its name from Simon van der Stel, the Cape’s governor, who received the land in 1685 and named it, according to some accounts, after the daughter of the commissioner who granted it. Groot Constantia, still standing today, is South Africa’s oldest continuously operating wine estate, its dessert wine once shipped to European nobility including Napoleon and referenced in Jane Austen’s novels.
Outdoor Adventures
The Constantia Wine Route links Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwachting, all descended from Van der Stel’s original grant, with Kirstenbosch and the Table Mountain trails close by for hiking.
Food and Dining
Constantia’s wine estates carry much of the fine dining here, alongside the Jonkershuis Restaurant at Groot Constantia and other estate eateries specialising in Cape cuisine.
Family Friendly Activities
Large plots, good schools and the wine-valley setting make Constantia one of the Southern Suburbs’ most sought-after family addresses, generally at a premium price point.
Nightlife and Culture
Wine tastings and estate events cover most of the social calendar, with Claremont and the city centre close by for anything livelier.
