Things to do Eerste River

Eerste River takes its name, Afrikaans for “first river”, from the waterway running through it. It grew from a cluster of farms into a proper village after a railway station opened here in 1862 on the line from Cape Town, at what one English visitor at the time called “a very pretty and wealthy little village on the high road to the wool districts.”

Its most significant landmark predates all of that: the Kramat, tomb of Sheikh Yussuf of Bantam, exiled to the Cape in 1693 by the Dutch East Indies administration. He’s credited with introducing Islam to South Africa, and his tomb is considered one of the most important shrines in the Cape’s Holy Circle of Islam.

Eerste River sits close to both the Stellenbosch wine route and Somerset West, so day trips out are easy, though the suburb itself is more residential and practical than scenic.
