Mowbray: A Yorkshire Name on an Old Cape Farm
Mowbray was originally part of the farm Pennywich, later named after a village in North Yorkshire, England. It sits just north of Rondebosch and is one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs, home to Mostert’s Mill, built in 1796 and once the oldest surviving complete windmill in South Africa before a 2021 wildfire severely damaged it.
