Suburb in the Forests
Newlands: One of the World’s Most Beautiful Cricket Grounds
Newlands Cricket Ground opened in 1888 on part of the old Mariendal Farm, and remains one of the most picturesque grounds in world cricket, Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak forming the backdrop. The Western Province Rugby Union set up its own ground on the same farm around the same time, and the area has been closely tied to brewing since Jacob Letterstedt acquired the land in 1845, home today to the Newlands Brewery.
Outdoor Adventures
Newlands Forest, right on the suburb’s edge, offers genuine hiking up towards Table Mountain, and match days at the cricket and rugby grounds are an event in themselves.
