Things To Do Observatory

Observatory, known locally as “Obs”, takes its name from the Royal Observatory established here in 1820, headquarters of what’s now the South African Astronomical Observatory. It was also one of the few racially integrated communities in Cape Town under apartheid. Its best-known landmark is Groote Schuur Hospital, where Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first human heart transplant on 3 December 1967, an event you can still learn about at the Heart of Cape Town Museum on site.

Rhodes Memorial and Table Mountain’s eastern trails are both close by, along with the River Club golf course and Hartleyvale Stadium for soccer and hockey.
