Things to do Strand

Few Cape Town suburbs have gone through as many names as Strand. Since the 1650s it’s been Melkbaai, Vlooibaai, Mostertsbaai, Van Ryneveldsdorp, and Somerset Strand, before finally settling on the simple Afrikaans word for “beach” in 1937. It grew as a fishing and holiday settlement for inland Stellenbosch families long before it became a suburb of Cape Town proper, and that beach-town identity is still the whole point of the place.

Outdoor Adventures

Strand’s long sandy beach and tidal pool are the main event, and the Strand Pavilion precinct anchors most of the beachfront activity. Gordon’s Bay and its Blue Flag Bikini Beach are a short drive along the coast, and the Hottentots Holland mountains are close enough for a proper hike inland.

Casual seafood and beachfront dining dominate here, with more upmarket options a short drive into Somerset West’s wine-estate restaurants.
