The Lush Peaceful Suburb
Tokai: Home to a National Monument Arboretum
Tokai sits on the foothills of Constantiaberg, bordered by SAFCOL pine plantations and the suburbs of Zwaanswyk, Kirstenhof, Steenberg, Bergvliet and Constantia. Its Tokai Arboretum was declared a National Monument in 1985 on its 100th anniversary, home to over 274 tree species across 26 hectares, the first large-scale silviculture research station in Cape Town.
Outdoor Adventures
Tokai Park, formerly Tokai Forest, offers walking, cycling and mountain biking through both fynbos and pine plantation, with the Arboretum’s tea room providing maps of the numbered tree collection for a self-guided walk.
Food and Dining
Tokai has a handful of estate-adjacent restaurants, with the wider Constantia Valley dining scene a short drive away.
Family Friendly Activities
Tokai is known for stately homes on generous, established gardens, including gated communities like the Steenberg Golf Estate, making it one of the more upmarket family addresses in the Southern Suburbs.
Nightlife and Culture
Tokai is quiet and green rather than nightlife-driven, Constantia and Claremont are the nearest options for something busier.
